WILLIAM HADDEN’S ‘ENERGY RELEASE THEORY’

•William Hadden, in 1970 explained ‘energy transfer or release’ as the main factor for accident causation and said that the accidents and injuries are caused because of transfer or release of energy between object, event or environment interacting with the people.

•Ten strategies were suggested by him to prevent or reduce losses as under;

  1. Prevent transfer or origin of energy i.e safe substitution.

2. Reduce the amount of energy transfer i.e drive machine/vehicle at low speed.

3. Prevent release of energey i.e flameproof fitting, fall arrester device.

4. Change the rate of release or distribution of released energy i.g reduce road slope, use inhibitor to reduce rate of reaction.

5. Divert (separate) the energy released in time or space.  i.e separate path for vehicles and pedestrian traffic, discharge gases at height.

6. Provide barrier between energy release and a structure or a person likely to be affected. i.e guards on machine, radiation shield, use of PPEs.

7. Make the surface of structure safe. i.e no sharp edges, big handles of tools.

8. Strengthen the structure or person susceptible to damage i.e fire resistance wall, training to workers and vaccination for disease.

9. Early detection of damage and actuate counter effect. i.e fire detectors with sprinklers, high level alarm, tripping of feed pump.

10. Speedy measure to restore normal condition. i.e rehabilitation of worker, repairing of machines.
