Need (Purpose) of Motivation:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba It includes inspiration, aspiration, communication, education, participating and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba All these factors are essential to mould a man to achieve desired goal in a desired manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba It is a fuel or driving force for all human activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba To minimize human errors or unsafe acts or omissions, motivation helps much and it promotes safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba If people are not motivated for safety, other efforts will not help much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Even if, other measures are taken, motivation is necessary to mould the people to achieve our goals more speedily and yet safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Various theories are available for motivating people for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Periodical feedback to maintain motivation is also necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Our present problem is not of lack of knowledge of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba The real problem is of implementation of that knowledge, at the shop floor level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba This is because of lack of self-motivation, lack of communication and motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba People should be made participative by inviting them to say their opinion, reaction and views and guided to act for implementing the safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Direct communication is more useful than indirect communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Thus communication and motivation helps in implementing the safety laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Formula for Performance = Ability X Motivation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Total loss control can be achieved by motivation of employers, employees, trade unions and the Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Losses of time, money, property and production because of accidents, conflicts etc. must be reduced and that is possible by motivation at all fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NATURE OF MOTIVATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Motivation is one of the factors that stimulates or influences job performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba A Latin word \u2018mover\u2019 means to move. A motive is what moves a person or impels a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Motivation is concerned with \u2018why\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 of behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba P.T Yound defines motivation as \u201cthe process of arousing action, sustaining the activity in progress and regularizing the pattern of activity\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Steers and Porter and Greenberg & Baron identified 3 major components of motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Force or drive to lead to some behavior<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    2. Function to guide behavior in desired direction Maintaining and sustaining behavior once it has occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u25ba Herbert Moore says \u2018To motivate is to cause a release of energy in relation to desired goal\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u25ba Effective motivation is determined by three factors;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. The goal that is to be realized<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      2. The energy that is to be realized<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      3. Tool that are to be used to direct and control that energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba The whole problem of motivation is the problem of the development of attitudes, loyalties and capacities for making sacrifices toward an entity that is of greater consequence to the individual worker than his job or his personal welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba Motivation runs top to bottom, therefore top management and supervisors should be motivated first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba NRF Maier explains motivating as a way of bringing to expression an ability, which a person already possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba He describes two aspects: subjective and objective<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba Subjective side is a condition in the individual, which is called \u2018need\u2019, a drive or desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba The objective side is an object outside the individual, which may be called the \u2018incentive\u2019 or \u2018goal\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u25ba When an incentive satisfies need, the situation is called motivating. The types of needs and incentives vary from time to time and person to person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
