A motive is what moves a person or impels a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Motivation is concerned with \u2018why\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 of behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba P.T Yound defines motivation as \u201cthe process of arousing action, sustaining the activity in progress and regularizing the pattern of activity\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Steers and Porter and Greenberg &amp; Baron identified 3 major components of motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Force or drive to lead to some behavior<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Function to guide behavior in desired direction Maintaining and sustaining behavior once it has occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Herbert Moore says \u2018To motivate is to cause a release of energy in relation to desired goal\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Effective motivation is determined by three factors;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The goal that is to be realized<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>2. The energy that is to be realized<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Tool that are to be used to direct and control that energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba The whole problem of motivation is the problem of the development of attitudes, loyalties and capacities for making sacrifices toward an entity that is of greater consequence to the individual worker than his job or his personal welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Motivation runs top to bottom, therefore top management and supervisors should be motivated first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba NRF Maier explains motivating as a way of bringing to expression an ability, which a person already possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba He describes two aspects: subjective and objective<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba Subjective side is a condition in the individual, which is called \u2018need\u2019, a drive or desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba The objective side is an object outside the individual, which may be called the \u2018incentive\u2019 or \u2018goal\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25ba When an incentive satisfies need, the situation is called motivating.
